The Legend Part II

The legend continues in USA

I came to the USA on the 11th of August 2005. Since then, my life has sort of changed. Of course, I did not learn much of the responsibility thingy. All the changes seem to, in the end, point to one thing as their cause: the high volume of studies in the university. It simply is crazy.
Anyhow, I got an appartment, joined the Bangladeshi Students' Association and the Muslim Students' Association, and started class as a Molecular Biosciences and Biotechnology (MBB) Major. I came thinking that I would stay in Rita Khala's (my aunt) house 20 miles from campus, which turned out to be 120 miles away up in Prescott. HA!HA!HA! Well, although now she lives in Phoenix, I kinda like it here in Tempe and am planning to stay here until I graduate.

So, for one whole month, I had no roommates. Then, I had Nasir Mama (family friend) come over and stay with me. He also left after about one and a half month later, leaving me alone for the rest of the semester. The next semester, I got two roommates; they were Uzzal and Suman Bhai. I had lots of fun with them.

But then Suman Bhai left a semester later, when his wife, Tushi Apu, managed to get to the US. Then, another guy called Zadeed joined us. Since then, we three had been roommates and close friends. Then, one day, quite unexpectedly, Uzzal bhai left us and went to Bangladesh for good. I must admit he really didn't like it here. And I guess that's part of life... no one here sticks to the same people (even married ppl). So, now it's just Zadeed and myself.

As far as my studies are concerned, they aren't going that well. My GPA is shakier than other prospective graduate students. So, I had decided to postpone my graduation date from December 2007 to May 2008. Well, there was another reason for that... the ASU graduate school for Molcular and Cellular Biology did not accept Spring admissions. So, early graduation meant I could do internship in the meantime. I decided to the internships on campus and do my Honors thesis along with it. Now, I'm just worried about my GPA and my GRE scores to be high enough to get me to Grad school.

I came here thinking that I was one of the smarter ones from the average crowd and I had the destiny to rewrite history, which is why I chose Molecular Biology as my subject. I wanted to do research and help mankind in a more challenging way... and maybe I wanted to be famous as well (like by winning a Nobel Prize or something). As more of life unfolds before me, things are starting to change... my expectations may, and I guess will, change, but nevertheless my hopes and goals will remain the same. In the end, I might not win a Nobel Prize, but I will do something that will make my parents, relatives and descendants very proud of me.

People that I met

I met some really wonderful people here. First and foremost, my wonderful cousin called Rhea (d. o. b - August 7th 2003). She loves me so much (especially when I have a can of Cocacola in my hand). Another guy was Polin Bhai (president, BSA-ASU). I stayed at this guy's house for a fortnight or so, until I found a suitable appartment to live in. Here I met Giser bhai and Maroof Bhai. These two are simply hillarious and, not to mention, extremely helpful. I also met Uzzal Bhai a few days later. He also was new then, and so we share some common experiences. I met Picklu Bhai, who's a guitarist, loves Warfaze's songs and is an electrical engineer in a company called M&M(?). There was this guy called Sheikh Mohd. Mahbub Murshed (Suman Bhai), who'd been my roommate in my second semester. He was really awesome guy. He and I had a lot in common. There was also this guy called Shishir Bhai, who immediately became my role model. The guy is simply a genious, whether he admits it or not. There was also this guy called Wali Bhai, who is pretty awesome. This guy is a business major, but his expertise in handling and fixing bicycles is unbeatable. Then, there is Nawshin, the only Bangladeshi (who was not born and brought up in the US) my age here. She came a year after me and then we became very good friends. She, Adnan (Zadeed) and I sometimes hang out together. And then there were so many more... I just can't finish listing 'em all.

That was the list of Bangladeshis. To add to that, I had lots of international friends; Eliza, Karan, Alexis, Zizung and Eystein were the significant ones. My american friends included Martin, Howard, Ian, Jessica, Lisa, Antonio and others. It is so cool to have so many friends. Sad that I'm extremely bad at keeping in touch with them. They must be thinking that this guy doesn't understand anything but studies.

A budding musician in USA

Life goes on... and so does the music. I did not stop singing after I came to US. In fact, it was after coming to US that the High Speed internet and the unlimited storage space in Multiply allowed me to post some cover songs online. Since then, I have uploaded about 32 songs online. Of course, I did not dare to upload the original compositions because of fear of theft. But I already have about 13 songs composed. I want to do some professional recording and release an actual album, but don't know if that's ever going to happen. I never wanted to pick music up as a career, but I don't want my skills and my compositions to just die with me. I hope Allah (God) guides me.

My performances in Arizona began with a program called Bangladesher Hridoy Hote (From the Heart of Bangladesh). It was arranged by the Bangladesh Theatre Association. After that, I did various other performances both inside and outside ASU, casual and formal, solos, duets and groups. I am especially thankful to the International Student's Office (ISO) at ASU, who organized various international events every year and allowed me to represent Bangladesh through my performances. And many thanks go to the wonderful ladies who have agreed do sing duets with me... Nawshin Syeda, Moutushi Tanzia Zakir and Nazhi Apu (I don't know her last name). And of course, I can't thank Suman Bhai and Picklu Bhai enough.

"Aankhon mein sapne liye... ghar se hum chal to diye... jane yeh rahe ab le jayegi kahan..." Let's just see where this road leads to.
